In Alaska’s Far North, Two Cultures Collide

BARROW, Alaska ((NYT)— Each summer and fall, the Inupiat, natives of Alaska’s arid north coast, take their sealskin boats and gun-fired harpoons and go whale hunting. Kills are celebrated throughout villages as whaling captains share their catch with relatives and neighbors. Muktuk, or raw whale skin and blubber, is a prized delicacy.

Eight cities pledge more climate action

LONDON (Reuters) - Eight provincial English cities pledged on Thursday to take extra steps to combat climate change, echoing the actions of several counterparts in the United States.

Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, Sheffield, Leeds, Nottingham, Liverpool and Manchester promised to meet or exceed the goal of cutting carbon emissions by 60 percent by 2050 to be set out next week in the Climate Change Bill.

( New York Times ) — As the first bush fires of the year rage through Australia’s national forests, concern over climate change and its effects is intensifying among Australians. A telephone survey of more than 1,000 people released today showed that 40 percent of Australians thought that global warming was a greater threat to security than Islamic fundamentalism. Only 20 percent thought it was less serious.
